Hotel Sweet Hotel

At the 2015 California Dreamin’ Writers’ Conference I heard many attendees talk about how much they liked the conference hotel and amenities: cooked-to-order complimentary breakfasts, a major mall within walking distance, and—of course—the very convenient BevMo across the street!

A sneak peak at the new rooms.

You’ll be happy to know, the 2017 California Dreamin’ Writers’ Conference will be held once again at the beautiful Embassy Suites Hotel in Brea, California. Brea Mall, with Nordstrom and Macy’s, high-end specialty shops, and a full-service day spa, is a short walk away. A little further afield, but less than a mile, is Brea Downtown, with an Edwards Cinema, more specialty shops, and restaurants. Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the Richard Nixon Presidential Library are all a short drive away.

Next year, this award-winning hotel will be even better—a major room renovation is in progress. Every one of the hotel’s two-room suites is being updated and modernized. Meeting areas and the atrium are also scheduled for updating, and the hotel’s Egyptian theme (remember the Giza, Nile, and Alexandria meeting rooms?) will be rebranded.

Working on the planning of an event of this type is not something I’ve ever been a part of before. As one of the new members of the California Dreamin’ Writers’ Conference, I’ve been privileged to work with and learn from committee veterans Jann Audiss, Hotel Subcommittee, and Judy Duarte, Workshops/Speakers Subcommittee. For this type of event, advance planning goes into everything from the number and types of hotel rooms to lock in to the deployment of audio/visual equipment, and the types of meals to be served. Close coordination on the timing and location of events is essential so hotel staff has time for set up and break down.

If you stay in the conference hotel, you’ll be happy to know your meals will be covered from breakfast on Saturday through lunch on Sunday. If you’re adding on Book Camp with Debra Dixon, you’ll get a box lunch as part of the Book Camp package.  And, if you’d like to cut costs a bit by sharing a room, the two-room suites easily accommodate extra roommates.
